Special Opportunity for Three CDL Debaters to Speak at Significant Chicago Event

A large group of organizers and sponsors are staging a significant celebration of the life of civil rights leader and social activist Dorothy Height at the Auditorium Theater (50 E. Congress Parkway, just down the block from the CDC office) on the evening of Tuesday, February 1st, beginning at 7:30pm.

As is evident from the flier, this will be a very high-profile event. There is even some talk that Michelle Obama will be making an appearance on the program.

Chicago Public Schools would like three Chicago Debate League debaters to participate on the program — to read three very short excerpts from Dorothy Height’s autobiography, Open Wide the Freedom Gates. The program script features the excerpts early on (pp. 3, 5, and 6).  The only students on the program will be the three CDL debaters.

We’re still looking into complimentary tickets for a parent or coach.

This will be a special opportunity for our wonderful, articulate, poised, dynamic debaters to show themselves (and the CDL) off to the city, in celebration of a very important figure in the civil rights movement in the U.S.

We need to have the names of our three CDL readers to CPS soon, so please contact me with a quick email (leslynn@resources.chicagodebates.org) or call (312-848-2271) if you have a debater interested in being one of the lucky three. Because of the importance of the event, we will likely name a fourth debater, as an alternate, in case someone gets sick or otherwise has to back out at the last minute.
