Reminder: Coach PD Training – Saturday at Loyola
- When: 9 am – 11 am, Saturday, February 12th
- Where: Corboy Law Center, Loyola University Water Tower Campus, 25 E. Pearson (near Red Line Chicago stop on CTA), Room 105 (note new room number)
- Who: Coaches who plan to attend should register with David by e-mail by Friday at noon. Coaches attending receive 2 hours of PD toward their 10-hour second semester requirement and incentives.
- What: The Consult NATO Counterplan.
Wayne Tang, a patent attorney and successful coach at Maine East for many years and an institution in Chicago-area debate (and longtime friend and supporter of the CDL), will lead coaches through this important (and underutilized) negative strategy found in the Core Files, with an introduction to the argument, the basic theoretical issues related to Consult Counterplans, how they are debated by the negative and affirmative, and the challenges of Counterplan strategy on the military deployment topic. He will also provide some examples of meeting activities and speaking drills that coaches can use to help students learn and answer this argument during their debate practices. This will be of value not only to coaches trying to become more familiar with off-case negative arguments to help their students expand their negative strategy, but also to our more experienced coaches who can gain from the experience and perspective of a coach who has dealt with these often misunderstood – and potentially confusing – Counterplans for years.
