CDL's Summer Programming Begins Tomorrow
Tomorrow we begin what should be our most exciting summer of programming yet, with the CDSI and Coach Training Courses (held in Room 284 at Westinghouse).
All coaches should check the current CDSI registration and follow up with their debaters by phone and e-mail to ensure they are confirmed and prepared to attend and succeed at our best CDSI yet.
Coaches should also e-mail David about requested lab placement/level for their students signed up.
Please note a few important details below:
- CDSI Dates: 7/25 – 8/12, Monday through Friday, 9 am – 3 pm – students should plan to arrive by 8:45 each morning, students who arrive late or miss multiple unexcused days will be withdrawn from the camp. Students must enter by the football fields on Franklin, not through the main entrance, and will assemble in the Auditorium.
- Location: Westinghouse College Prep’s beautiful, brand-new, air-conditioned building at 3223 W. Franklin.
- Meals and transportation:Lunch and reduced-fare CTA cards are provided daily – CTA fare cards are handed out on-site only, starting on the first day of camp
- Students who have not yet paid the $25 registration fee may bring checks or money orders (no cash) made out to: “Chicago Board of Education” (please note we can’t take checks or money orders made out to CDC, CDL, CPS, Westinghouse or anything else other than “Chicago Board of Education”)
The Coach Training Courses also begin Monday in Room 284 at Westinghouse with the Introduction to Debate Coaching (July 25 – 27, 9am – 3pm) and the Varsity Debate Coaching (August 1 – 3, 9am – 3pm) courses.
The Varsity Debate Coaching course in particular is taking very full advantage of the outstanding “debate professionals” staff that has been assembled for the 2011 Chicago Debate Summer Institute: there will be a series of highly experienced leaders covering a solid set of Varsity-level debating and coaching issues. The Introduction to Debate Coaching is an essential introduction to competitive academic debate, debate instruction, and the CDL, one that will be concentrated and highly productive. Both courses will provide a grounding in the new CDL Debater Development Benchmarks, which will form the basis of qualitative metrics for CDL debaters and will serve as the organizing principles for coach and student training curriculum throughout the season.
Both courses are being held at the CDSI location, Westinghouse College Prep, 3223 W. Franklin Blvd. Both courses offer participants CPDUs and 5 hours of professional development credit with the CDL for SY2012. Both courses offer lunch and parking free.
