Student Seminar This Saturday, 9/24
The Chicago Debate League has a Saturday Seminar for Students on 9/24, this Saturday, 10am – 12pm, at the Loyola University Chicago School of Law, 25 E. Pearson St., Room 106.
This Seminar is for JV (first-year) debaters and inexperienced Varsity debaters. We will conduct the Mini-Debate Exercise on arguments from the CDL Core Files, focusing on these CDL Debater Development Benchmarks:
6. Flowing
(a) Mechanics: structure of a flow, what is flowed
(b) Utility: how a flow is used and why it is used that way
7. Responsiveness/Clash
(a) The principle of responsiveness in a debate (silence = assent)
(b) Line-by-line debating
Coaches need to register the number of debaters that they have confirmed will attend (numbers are enough, we don’t need names) by the end of the day, Friday, 9/23, by email to info@resources.chicagodebates.org.
We will have copies of the arguments from the Core Files on site — students do not need to bring their Core Files with them — but because of this, it is even more important than usual that we have an accurate “head count” in advance.
Coaches are welcome to attend to observe the Mini-Debate Exercise in action. Coach observation will count toward CDL professional development credit.
