CDL Monday Memo — vol. 1, no. 6 — August 13th, 2012
Welcome to the latest edition of the CDL Monday Memo.
Welcome to the start of a new school year for our Track E schools!
1. First CDL Coach Training Seminar of Fall – August 30th
The first CDL Coach Training seminar of the fall will be offered from 12:30pm – 3:30pm on Thursday, August 30th at Loyola University Chicago School of Law, 25 E. Pearson. Coaches should inquire with their Principals now about attending this Coach Training during their scheduled PD day and e-mail cdc@resources.chicagodebates.org in order to register. Anyone who had problems with this e-mail last week should find it’s now working – we were in the middle of an e-mail migration after switching hosts.
2. Pre-Season Student Workshop Wraps Up Successful Three Days
We had CDL debaters from 19 CDL schools take part successfully in our three-day CDL Pre-Season Student Workshop, which concluded on Wednesday, August 8th. Thanks to our great instructors: Marshall’s Jim Dorrell and Morgan Park alum and University of Wisconsin senior Cydney Edwards, who led the Beginning JV lab; Whitney Young alum and University of Illinois freshman Hanna Nasser, who led the Varsity Transition lab (with David Song); and Whitney Young alum and University of Michigan junior Kevin Hirn and Northside alum and Pomona College freshman Tom Trieu, who led our Advanced Varsity lab.
Student survey responses were strong and we gave each student an assessment on what they’d learned over the three days at the completion of the workshop.
3. Recruiting Materials to Start the Year
Schools should now have received some recruiting posters which they can use to help draw students in as the school year begins. Please contact us if you need additional posters.
Here are David’s Top Ten Recruiting Tips and some additional Recruitment and Retention advice . Links to more resources like these and flyers and posters can be found on the CDL programming site’s Coaching Resources page.
4. CDL Debaters Featured at DuSable Musem of African American History on Thursday, August 23rd
We’re excited to announce that two top CDL debaters, Mercedes Hall from Daniel Hale Williams Prep and Adam Glover from King College Prep, will take part in a public debate about school discipline and restorative justice at the DuSable Museum of African American History.
The debate (tentatively scheduled to start between 6:30 and 7 pm) will last approximately 30 minutes, including an introduction to the CDL and Q&A, and will precede a free outdoor screening of The Great Debaters in the DuSable Museum’s Sunken Garden that will last until 10 pm. This is a great evening for CDL debaters, families, coaches, and friends of the CDL and includes a free film, free popcorn, a tour of the museum (starting at 5:30), and a great public debate showcasing two of our finest in an historic setting.
The DuSable Museum is located at 740 East 56th Place (click link for directions).
