Join us for a PUBLIC DEBATE Saturday, July 13th at 2 p.m., at the DuSable Museum of African-American History.
See CDL debaters from Morgan Park, Lane Tech, Julian, and Williams debate this important historical topic:
Resolved: That the Emancipation Proclamation — including its opening of the armed services to persons of color — was passed primarily for reasons of political expedience, rather than high moral purpose, and therefore it is not one of the great American civil rights documents.
This event, which takes place as part of the Museum’s celebration of the 150th anniversary of the Emancipation Proclamation, is free and open to the public.
Crowdfunding for the CDSI
The Chicago Debate Summer Institute (CDSI) makes high-quality pre-season debate training accessible to Chicago students. We are raising funds to provide this two-week intensive high school debate program (and one-week middle school program) FREE to low-income students. Thanks to our amazing donors, we’ve already raised over $25,000 for CDSI.
But we need $5000 more by July 29 to meet our fundraising goal. That’s where you come in. Plus, an anonymous donor has agreed to match all new contributions — so your gift will count double!
Our second annual Make Room for Debate fundraiser, held on June 27, was a terrific success because the generosity of almost 250 guests and 36 individual and corporate sponsors.
The event celebrated the CDC’s powerful debate programming for Chicago students and honored Toni Preckwinkle, President of the Cook County Board.
Special thanks to our Platinum sponsors, Allstate and Kirkland & Ellis; Media sponsor, SPLASH; and Silver sponsors, Dentons, Huron Legal, Performance Trust, and Steans Family Foundation.
